“It’s hard to believe the difference it has made, but quitting my office-based PA role and becoming a Fyxer has transformed my life”
- Helen, FYXER
“Spending more time with my son and avoiding a lengthy commute were the obvious benefits, but as soon as I realised the financial sense, it was a no-brainer."
There’s a lot to think about when switching jobs, especially when you have a young family: the work, the salary, the commute – how they all impact on your home life. As a young mother travelling from Buckinghamshire to Central London each day, it was all of the above. They’re also the reasons why joining FYXER was the best career decision I’ve ever made.
In my old job, I was earning £58,000 per year as a PA for a large corporate, but after the birth of my son Alexander (now 3 years-old), I was looking at ways to cut down on the four hour daily commute. FYXER’s remote working model really appealed to me, but I hesitated over the salary cut (£30,000 pa salary with a £7,000 bonus), so I decided to crunch the numbers.
In my head, travel costs would be the biggest saver. Instead of travelling like a sardine everyday and paying £550 per month for the privilege, I’d only be spending £150 per month and heading to the London HQ once, saving me almost £5,000 over the year.
However, I then calculated childcare costs and was blown away. I had been paying £1300 a month for Alexander to be looked after between 7am-5pm, Monday-Friday. With FYXER, it would be only £400 per month, saving me nearly £11,000 per year. The savings to be made from being in a reduced tax bracket was the icing on the cake.
Spending more time with my son and avoiding a lengthy commute were the obvious benefits, but as soon as I realised the financial sense, it was a no-brainer.
What’s more, the work is so much more rewarding. Working as a PA in the corporate world meant facing antiquated attitudes and expectations on a daily basis. At FYXER, it’s the opposite. I work with a great team of friendly, supportive and driven EAs, while also having the autonomy to control my working day. It’s been a breath of fresh air.
“Looking back, it’s astonishing that I used to think commuting three hours a day was ‘normal’ - I’m never going back."
Up until a year ago, my day-to-day routine would begin with the unholy buzz of the 6.30 a.m. alarm. I’d then spend the next 30 minutes frantically getting myself and Bella (my beagle) ready for the day, before rushing out the door in time to make the Colchester-London train. After getting to know other people’s armpits in the Tube better than I’d like, I’d hopefully be in the office for 8.45 a.m.
Now, the alarm buzzes at 8.45 a.m and I’m at my desk 15 minutes later. I’ve swapped £8 lunches in the office with long lunch time walks with Bella. At 5.30 p.m., I relax with Bella on the sofa instead of wearily standing on the return train. The fact I’m saving £9,000 per year on train fares and dog sitting fees is just a bonus.
It’s hard to believe the difference it has made, but quitting my office-based PA role and becoming a Fyxer has transformed my life. Looking back, it’s astonishing that I used to think commuting three hours a day was ‘normal’ - I’m never going back.
“Now, I can be coming up with solutions to my client’s issues one minute and running through Epping Forest with my dog Boris the next."
For me, joining FYXER was all about the opportunities. I’ve always taken great satisfaction in helping people and therefore working as an Executive Assistant was a great fit: devising and implementing ideas to make people’s lives easier was a dream job. However, I started to find that my job was all-encompassing: through a combination of the travelling and the hours, I didn’t have time for the other important people in my life.
That’s why I gave FYXER a chance. They realised that a great EA doesn’t need to be in the office 24/7 and their business-model has given me the opportunity to not just be there for my clients, but also my colleagues, kids and pets.
Now, I can be coming up with solutions to my client’s issues one minute and running through Epping Forest with my dog Boris the next. I’m available to help my colleagues as well as my teenage kids, while working from home has also given me time to engage in my hobbies on weekday evenings, such as gardening and sewing. I like to know I’m making a difference and with FYXER I know I am.
